Default New player, new ranger.

Hey.

I've started playing yesterday on a Ranger, and while I searched these forums and the internet for guides to build a strong ranger, I think it is really not noob friendly to find accurate information about how to build a character.

Basically I want a character that can farm and go through the campain but at the same time really strong in pvp? Is this possible?

Also, the attribute points are really something I need pointers for..Right now I put 3 in expertise and marksmanship and 2 in beast mastery but am really unsure how I should go about levelling those stats.

Another thing, the second profession...I really don't know what would be the best for me..I tried out the monk skills and they were great, not by accident I accepted to test the warrior ones and am stuck with sword skills that I can't use until I chose my second profession...I seen in the sticky thread that most builds used mesmer? Is this right? Or what other profession is great for a ranger that wants to farm and pvp?

Thanks alot!

unlike other games, everything about your character excluding the primary profession can be easily changed. that means you are not locked into one character build. with this in mind, try it and find something that works for you, and don't be afraid to change your build for different situations.

rangers in pvp are the "jack of all trades" profession, meaning they are decent in almost any situation but not spectacular at any one area. this generally calls for a player who can fulfill all the roles all at the same time. so yes, rangers can be a bit harder to play for a new player.

Ok so I can spend attribute points and chose a profession right now and change this later without any cost?

It says that I won't be able to change my mind once I make the commitment..

that's false. you'll be able to change your secondary profession after you reach a certain point in the storyline. a R/W is fine, since you can get by with just ranger skills and completely ignore your secondary.

and yes, you are allowed to adjust your attributes, skills, and secondary profession outside of explorable/mission instances.

1) Use the edit button instead of posting twice.

2) Attributes and skills can be changed at any time; secondary professions can only be changed after getting to a certain part in the game (you'll only be locked into the profession you choose temporarily).

I'm not that stupid..I clicked on the post new thread button and immediatly remembered I forgot to ask about 2nd profession so I clicked on cancel and added the rest..But I guess it had already posted.

I started on prophecies, free trial, still wondering wether to get factions or prophecies.

I don't think that you reach the point in prophecies where you can change profession with trial.
Is the longest campaign.
In factions you can change easily after napuih quarter mission in senji corner.

Rangers can be one of the best professions in the game, due to their ability to change their build depending on where you are. There are many different types of styles a ranger can play, like trapper, thumper, interrupter, degen, etc. They are quite durable and can also solo farm in certain areas like FoW. Not sure if guru has a thread about playing as a ranger, but wiki has an excellent thread about the pros, cons, and what nots for playing as a ranger. You should check it out.

Guide to playing as a ranger

Rangers can be confusing a bit at first, but once you learn how to manage your attribute points and learn a few of the basics, it is really very easy to play one.

Starting in Prophecies will give you plenty of time to learn some basic ranger work, but unfortunately, you won't unlock skills very quickly as you progress, and you won't get a chance to earn elites until about halfway through the game--which, if you're learning the game and the ranger, can be a while.

I've played a little bit of PvP as a ranger, and, depending on TYPE of PvP, you can contribute a lot as a newer player, or not much.

Generally, you have the ability to send a lot of conditions around: bleeding, dazed, poisoned, crippled. This, coupled with the abilities to interrupt, is the usual ranger role in many PvP forms.
Going R/Mez offers some nice skills that mesh with these roles, and can be quite fun to play in PvE.

Another common way to play Ranger is with a pet and a hammer, a build called a "thumper" (you can use scythes, too, for similar fun). In these, you use your pet and your hammer for damage and knockdowns.

Farming, for rangers isn't impossible, but it uses a variety of odd tricks in many cases. Using a bar full of traps USED to be a common way to farm, but these have been replaced by other builds.

For Builds: http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Category:G...general_builds

This is your friend. Lots to help you learn. You don't need to copy everything from here; feel free to experiment. You won't have LOTS of these skills for a while, but you can get a sense of what Rangers can do.

If you're still at the point where you're picking a 2ndary profession, you've got a ways to go. Don't worry much yet about farming and PvP: play through, pick Mez, warrior, or Monk 2ndary, learn the skills and put together a bar, and have fun.

PM me if you have questions.
